“What if I smell gas?”
What's that smell? Natural gas is colorless and odorless so you wouldn't smell a thing if it were leaking into your home or neighborhood. For this reason, we give gas an unpleasant odor so you will notice if it is leaking.
If you smell a strong gas odor:
- Leave immediately and call our emergency number
- Do not attempt to relight the pilot
- Do not operate any appliances or turn any light switches on or off
- Do not use any matches or lighters. Do not smoke.
In the event of an emergency call:
Peoples Gas 1-866-556-6002
North Shore Gas 1-866-556-6005
If you smell a faint odor near an appliance, it could mean the pilot light is out and needs to be relit. If the odor is near a stove, it could be that one of your burners is unlit. If you need to relight your pilot but don't know how, call a qualified technician to relight the appliance.
If you still can't find the source of the smell, open the windows and doors, leave your home immediately and call the Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas emergency phone number—from another location that is away from the gas smell.
In fact, any time we're in your home and we've had to turn the gas back "on," we also check all of your gas appliances to ensure that they are connected and working properly. Because we value our relationship with you, we take this extra safety step.
