“What should I do in an emergency?”
Natural gas is one of the cleanest and safest energy sources. But on rare occasions, when service is interrupted or when a gas leak occurs, it's important to contact us immediately, whether you get your natural gas from us or another supplier. We respond to natural gas emergencies, FREE
OF CHARGE, 24 hours a day so if you ever need us, we're here for you.
Not only are we "on call" for you, we get to your home quickly after we get your call. On average, we are on-site within 25 minutes after receiving an emergency call.

“What are you doing to improve your service to me?”
Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are committed to constantly improving and
upgrading our system and our service to you.
That means, we are working to answer your calls faster, respond to your needs when it's convenient for you and work to upgrade equipment and pipelines. This process never stops. That's because we know that there are always newer and better ways to deliver for you.
Just this year, we upgraded 50 miles of cast-iron pipe with newer piping.
In many cases, that means upgrading older low pressure systems to modern medium
pressure systems. This work is often done in connection with City of Chicago
public improvement projects. The work includes:
- Replacing the gas mains in the street;
- Replacing the service line leading up your home or building; and
- Installing a new gas meter and regulator on the outside of your home or building.
The benefit to you is three-fold:
- Safety - In an emergency, Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas or
the Chicago Fire Department can shut off natural gas safely from the outside
of the building. This protects your property, reduces the risk of fire spreading
to adjacent buildings and the risk of death from fires or explosions.
- Convenience - We are required by federal law to conduct regular inspections of gas meters to ensure they are in proper working order. With an outside meter, you won't have to schedule an appointment and be at home to allow access to the meter.
- Reliability - Outside meters allow us to make faster repairs or change meters, if needed, without ever having to enter your home.
We conduct ongoing inspections of our equipment too. We regularly check the meters inside your home, but we are also in the process of moving inside meters to the outside of buildings so that we can inspect them regularly without inconveniencing you, our customer.
Finally, we visit 14,000 homes every week and have invested more than $950 million into our delivery system and equipment over the past decade. We are committed to maintaining our 6,000-mile network to ensure dependable, safe gas delivery for our existing and future customers.
